Our 2021 program

Our 2021 program of activities draws on our knowledge and experience in the sector, and our agility and capacity to advise, co-design and support community engaged arts projects and organisations across the state. In the current climate, we thrive upon a way of working that is uncertain and emergent alongside an increasing pool of connected artists, organisational associates and partners.

Mindful of this approach, we have divided this application between core ATWA capacity building (including the core ArTELIER Learning Exchange program) and residency program, and the standalone but interrelated ArTELIER linkage program.

Organisational funding: Learning Exchanges

This is our capacity building program for artists through reflective practice. In 2021 we have our Core Learning Exchange Program and are introducing two new Learning exchange programs: International connections and Shifting and Stirring. We are also seeking funding to redesign the TEX_T Tate Exchange program to deliver online.

Decloniosing our practice at The Long House 2019

Our Learning Exchanges are powerful gatherings for artists to share practice, usually based around a provocation from a specialist practitioner. Our 2019 Learning Exchanges included sessions on Diversity, the Voice of the Child, Planning, The Expanded Classroom, Arts Encounters in the Curriculum, Decolonising our Practice. The model of provocation followed by discussion and practice sharing have proved to be a valuable structure to creat a safe space for professional learning and personal growth.

Instead of beavering away alone, I now feel we are working for social change together, coming together to know we are not alone, and that united we are quite a force.
— ArTELIER artist, 2018

The ArTELIER Learning Exchange program is unique in Australia in that the artist receive a stipend for their contribution and attendance at these sessions. Usually about 15 ArTELIER artists attend the Learning Exchanges, allowing plenty of time and space for discussion and sharing.

In 2021 we intend to develop and extend the current successful paid Learning Exchange program for Tasmanian community engaged artists working with children, families and young people with four face-to-face (Burnie, Launceston, Hobart, Huonville), and eight online sessions.

Our 2021 themes will be defined, organised and run by different artists in the group.

In 2021 we intend to present a series of transnational online (unpaid) Satellite Learning exchanges bringing together community-engaged artists from Tasmania with national community-engaged artists and international leaders in the field (E.g Tate Associates, UK,  Arnold Aprill, USA, The Ark/Kids Own, Ireland, Jonju City of Arts Education, Korea.)

TEX_T - Tate Exchange Tasmania

The project was postponed due to COVID-19 in 2019/20. The aim was to generate an exciting new three-year co-created project to bring rich contemporary practice into Tasmania through a series of artist residencies and exchanges in partnership with Tate-Exchange, London, the Tate’s intergenerational outreach program. Contemporary Art Tasmania (CAT) remain partners in this project but it has been redesigned as an online-only program

Simon Spain is an international Tate Associate and has delivered various program at Tate Modern in London in recent years.

This action research project responds to a shared focus on environmental crises. Initially, it will be undertaken through a series of online Learning Exchanges leading to members of the ArTELIER team contributing to a program at Tate Modern in London in 2022. In 2021, TEX_T will connect and match key personnel in Tasmania and the UK to generate artist collaborations and exchanges to determine the scope of the future collaborations through a series on four online public conversations held at CAT in late 2021.

Organisational funding: Residencies

We have hosted literally hundreds of artists residencies over the past four years. In 2021 we anticipate that the current travel and social distancing restrictions may be eased and would like to offer two new subsidised residency opportunities: Mentor residencies, linked into our ArTELIER program and Mother residencies.

Mentor residencies

in 2021 we intend to better connect elements of our residency program with the ArTELIER program, by hosting four 8-day artist-in-residencies for inter/national artists – to mentor ArTELIER artists. These invited practitioners residencies will each ideally align with the four planned face-to-face Learning Exchanges within the ArTELIER 2021 program. The mentors will also support the ArtELIER linkage program and connect with other Tasmanian Arts activity where possible. Accommodation and travel will be provided for the Mentor residencies.

In 2021 we intend to offer four 8-day artist-in-residence opportunities for Tasmanian artist mothers to ‘take time out from their families’ and reconnect with community engaged arts practice using their residency as a time of self-reflection, recalibration and creative production of new practice. This program builds on a 2019 trial and acknowledges that in the current economic climate women particularly require subsidised support for mental health and wellbeing and to connect to their practice. Mother residencies will be selected from an open call, by a small panel including two previous mothers-in-residence.

Family-in-residence school holiday program

This is a new pilot program where we advertise for artist families to spend time out with us to have a fun curated week of creative exploration during the schools holidays. This is a new program to be developed in 2021. Details on request.

2021 program calendar

Here is an outline calendar for the 2021 program:

2021 calendar outline:

Learning Exchange program comprises ArTELIER, International, Shifting and Stirring

ArTELIER linkage projects occur throughout the year in response to community demand.

Youth organisations: ArTELIER

ArTELIER is our signature professional development program for over 45 community engaged artists across Tasmania to share and improve their practice working with children, families and young people. Alongside and interdependent of our Learning Exchange program, in 2021 we intend to further enable our ArTELIER practitioners to co-create and develop their own collective and partnership projects for children and young people across Tasmania.

Towards an independent ArTELIER Artists’ Collective

In 2021 we will recruit independent advice on establishing ArTELIER’s Artist Collective with independent governance for potential future separation from All That We Are. We shall continue to run mentoring Satellite Learning Exchanges for ArTELIER artists to apply for their own funded projects.
